These Are The Foods You Should Avoid During Pregnancy

Updated: Jan 13, 2021

During pregnancy the woman eats for two, so food obviously occupies an even bigger part of her life. Of course, the data of the daily diet is overturned since certain foods are considered prohibitive because it is considered possible to contain bacteria harmful to the mother and baby. Women during pregnancy are more prone to foodborne illness and this is due in large part to the changes that take place in their immune system.

This makes them particularly vulnerable to bacteria and in case of any type of infection their body is more difficult to defend. This is why there are foods that are typically rejected from the list of those that can be consumed freely during pregnancy because the risk of bacterial or parasitic infection is high. Doctors in their instructions explicitly state that foods such as raw or undercooked meat, raw eggs, sterile dairy, etc. should be avoided but there are some options that are not included in the list either because they are not very popular or because their ingredients are not obvious. Of course, if you forget and consume some food from the list, you do not need to panic. Inform your doctor who will undertake to submit you to the necessary examinations.

Fruit and vegetable juices

You can drink a juice at home or make a smoothie but you should be more careful than usual very simply because although it is a very nutritious and extremely healthy choice, if the fruits, vegetables or their cutting surface are not washed and thoroughly cleaned, there is a risk of cross-contamination. Fresh juice is also a product that has not been pasteurized so the risk of bacterial infection is relatively high. However, if you love juices so much that you do not want to eliminate them from your diet, follow the rules of hygiene and prefer to make them yourself instead of buying them from a cafe or juice bar.

Sushi and smoked salmon

Most pregnant women know that sushi is strictly forbidden, but many are unaware that smoked salmon is also forbidden because the smoking process does not involve cooking at temperatures high enough to destroy certain parasites and bacteria that can enter the placenta and cause serious problems in pregnancy. The fish must be cooked to at least 62.7 ° C before eating to be safe for pregnant women.

Fresh and sterile cheeses

When you are not absolutely sure about a product it will be good to follow the treadmill avoiding experimentation. What do we mean? Once you know that fresh and sterile cheeses that can be offered to you are forbidden, if you have an appetite for "snacks" and you like cheeses, stick to the classics (feta, gruyere or cream cheese) and leave out options such as brie, camembert, cashew fresh or If you love Mexican cuisine, cottage cheese is usually sprinkled over tacos or enchiladas.

Hot dogs and cold cuts

Pre-cooked and packaged sausages (pork or beef) really are not the best you can eat during pregnancy. Yes, it is junk food and it is not healthy, but there are additional causes that are on our list. For sausages, what generally applies to foods in this category that are cooked and then refrigerated, is that in some cases they become infected with bacteria that are killed only if you reheat the sausages to 73.8 ° C after removing them from the their packaging. In the same case belong all the cold cuts such as salami, bacon, pepperoni etc.

Ready-made chicken salads, salads with cold cuts, seafood, etc.

Of course, we are not talking about the ones that you make yourself at home and you have complete knowledge of the ingredients and their preparation, but the ones that you can find packaged in a shop window. Although seemingly safe to consume and kept cool and fresh, these salads sometimes contain microorganisms that can harm both mother and baby.

Homemade ice cream, Dutch sauce, meringue

When we talk about pregnancy hunger one of the first things that comes to mind is ice cream, right? However, we are not talking about the ice cream that you will buy from the kiosk to sweeten in the middle of the night or the one that you will get from the super market, but the homemade one, because in the recipe you will probably add raw eggs to give the ice cream a more creamy texture. Salmonella is "waiting" so it is best to avoid it, unless you skip the eggs in the recipe. The same thing you should think about if at a Sunday brunch you want to try those Benedict eggs that you were told were wonderful but as it is obvious, they are overflowing with the well-known Dutch sauce based on egg and which clearly if not properly preserved does not is suitable for consumption. Sweets that contain meringue that has not been cooked well are also considered dangerous.
